Informations About Humidors

Cigar humidors can be built from several different kinds of woods, but the most popular choice is Spanish cedar. This wood retains moisture well, adds to the flavor of the cigars, and will keep out pests that may infest the cigars, rendering them unsmokable. When a cigar humidor is initially purchased, it will need to be properly seasoned before cigars can be stored in it, and the hygrometer, the device used to measure humidity, should be calibrated.

To season a cigar humidor, the inside should be wiped down with a sponge soaked in distilled water. The sponge is set inside the cigar humidor on a piece of plastic wrap to prevent it from touching the wood, and the humidifying device should be filled with distilled water or a manufacturer's recommended humidifying solution. The humidor is closed for 24 hours before being opened and wiped down again. The sponge should be removed before the humidor is closed for another 24 hours, and then it will be ready for use, as long as the inside does not feel damp.

To calibrate a hygrometer, it should be placed into a plastic bag along with a bottle cap or similar small container filled with salt and a few drops of water. When kept in a sealed environment, salt will maintain a consistent humidity, and this property can be used to calibrate devices designed to measure humidity. After six hours, the hygrometer should read 75%. If it does not, it should be manually adjusted, if it allows you to do that. If not, remember the discrepancy when taking humidity readings, to make sure that your cigars will be kept in optimal conditions.

What Is Humidor?

A cigar humidors is a box designed to store and age cigars within the optimal humidity range of 68 % to 72% at room temperature. A humidor must contain a humidification system or device to add (or remove) moisture from its interior space to maintain the desired level of humidity. A humidor usually contains a hygrometer to measure the humidity level inside the box. Most personal humidors are made of wood, with the inside usually constructed with Spanish cedar.
In addition to its main purpose of storing, preserving and aging cigars for a number of years, a humidor can also be an attractive piece of furniture, and even a family heirloom. For most cigar connoisseurs, a humidor is a small investment that will protect a much larger investment of valuable cigars for many years.

Types of Humidors

Humidors range greatly in size and construct. They could be a simple wooden box that holds a dozen cigars, or a giant walk-in closet, holding an entire collection. In general, there are four types of humidors, each with its own function:

Personal Humidor: A personal humidor is used to store a small collection of cigars, whether they be for your own pleasure or for a special occasion. Similar to a wine cooler. Maybe you know that you are having a party in a month, and want to stash some extra cigars until then; a personal humidor is a great way to do so.

Personal humidors are also nice to look at, and make for good decorative pieces. A typical personal humidor can hold between 25 and 100 cigars.

Room-Size Humidor: Mostly you will find room-sized humidors in cigar shops, or maybe at a cigar club or bar. Their purpose is to store huge amounts of cigars. Unless you are rich and can spend a fortune on cigars, or fear the end is near and are squirreling away thousands and thousands of cigars, you probably won’t be finding yourself owning one of these anytime soon.

Table-top Humidors: These humidors are usually confined to one place, and are great as decorative pieces as well as storage devices. They hold cigars in the range of a few hundred to a few thousand.

Travel Humidors: As the name suggests, these humidors are made for traveling. Ideal for a day trip, or to take to a party or occasion. You can expect one to hold between 10 and 50 cigars.
